Wally Anskaitis Cup Set to Thrill Fans at Avalon Raceway
The motorsport community is gearing up for an unforgettable night of racing as the Wally Anskaitis Cup returns at Avalon Raceway this Thursday night, January 2. Sharing the spotlight with Round 4 of the Formula 500 Speedweek, this event promises to be an adrenaline-fueled start to the new year.
The Wally Anskaitis Cup is not just a race, it’s a celebration of legacy. Wally Anskaitis, was a cornerstone of the Grand Prix Midget Racing Club throughout the late 80's and 90's, played a vital role in shaping the sport and along with other members of the club helped in constructing the iconic concrete wall that still stands at Avalon Raceway today. Returning to this historic venue, where the club’s story began, adds emotional resonance for competitors and spectators alike.
This year’s nominations include an impressive roster of talent: Luke Ward will be driving the only Anskaitis chassis in the field in the VIC 7, while Daniel Meredith VIC 8, Mark Blackeby VIC 10 are set to be tussling for positions at some point in the night. Alex Myers VIC 11 last seasons pole sitter for the Cup and already a feature winner this year will be one to keep and eye on. Chris Fowler VIC 13/VIC 1 will be looking to make it two in a row and get his first victory at the track. Matt Kamolins VIC 22 some say he's an excitement machine and some call him "Captain Kaos" but one thing's for sure he'll be hard on the throttle at the green. Johnny Rouse has put in some hard work to get the VIC 32 ready to rumble for this meeting so keep an eye on him. Ex-Aussie champion Paul Perry VIC 33 has been quietly tuning his new car and word on the street is he's ready to cause an upset win soon while Shawn Ward VIC 44 is hoping for a better end to this season's Wally Anskaitis Cup, but after an improved performance last time out he seems to have the Coyote Racing machine on song again.
Rookie Locky Robotham has had heads turning after podium finishes in his first two meetings the young gun has done a thousand laps in a go-kart around Avalon and is keen to check out the big track and continue his form. Travis Florrimell VIC 81 the inaugural winner back in 2019 would dearly love to turn back the clock and repeat that performance. Terry Brown's VIC 88 is also entered for the event however, with driving duties in the Compact Speedcar he's unsure yet whether he'll be doing double duties or whether we will see someone else in the pilot seat.
With such a strong lineup, fans can expect intense racing all night long. Make sure you come down to the pits prior to racing for the pit walk from 4pm to grab a poster, get a photo with your favourite car/driver. It's the perfect way to kick off the new year!
