ALEX MYERS DOMINATES TO CLAIM FIRST WANGARATTA CUP VICTORY
In a night of thrilling action, Alex Myers secured his maiden Wangaratta Cup victory, completing a flawless performance that saw him take out all three heats and the prestigious feature race, marking his first GP Midget feature win.
The opening heat of the night saw Alex Myers pounce on an unexpected opportunity after red-hot favourite Chris Fowler was forced to retire on lap 5 due to terminal engine damage. With Fowler out of contention, Myers seized the lead and never looked back, setting the tone for the night. Terry Brown and Travis Florrimell rounded out the podium, while Myers clocked the fastest lap of the night at a blistering 15.962 seconds.
Myers carried his momentum into Heat 2, leading from start to finish. Terry Brown once again came home in second, while Locky Robotham, in his debut GP Midget meeting, impressed with a strong 3rd place finish. Unfortunately for Luke Ward his first race meeting wasn't quite going the way he'd hoped when he hit a rut out of turn 2 sending him into the wall on the back straight and ending his night.
In the third and final heat, Myers continued his winning ways. Terry Brown chased him all the way but couldn’t quite close the gap. Locky Robotham, after battling hard, claimed 3rd place after capitalizing on fuel issues for early leader Matt Kamolins.
The highly anticipated Wangaratta Cup feature race got off to a dramatic start as pole sitter Matt Kamolins failed to fire off the line, forcing a restart and promoting Terry Brown to the front row. Brown took full advantage of the situation, jumping to an early lead, with Myers slipping from 4th to 2nd and setting his sights on the leader.
For much of the race, Myers relentlessly pressured Brown, pulling alongside him on several occasions but finding no way past last seasons Masters Series Runner-up, as he stuck to the pole line. However, on lap 8, Brown made a slight mistake exiting turn 4, which allowed Myers to make his move, powering ahead into turn 1 to take the lead.
Meanwhile, behind the front-runners, a fierce battle for 3rd was unfolding between Locky Robotham and former Australian champion Paul Perry. The young Robotham held his nerve to edge out Perry and secure the final podium position.
With a clear track ahead, Myers comfortably led the remaining laps to not only take his first-ever Wangaratta Cup victory but also secure a clean sweep of the night, winning all three heats and the feature race. It was a dominant display from Myers, cementing his place as one of the rising stars of GP Midget racing.
Newly appointed club president Shawn Ward commented at the end of the night "it was great to see Alex get his first victory, it's been a long time coming and great for him to do it front of a lot of his family. We're a club that values the family atmosphere and there is a real family vibe about the club and we're now seeing quite a few second generation GP Midget drivers coming through. It was great to see Locky and Luke both having a crack out there tonight and both have such a great attitude and are a pleasure to talk to."
Myers’ performance will no doubt be one to remember as he adds his name to the history books of the Wangaratta Cup, marking his first career feature win and setting the stage for more success in the future.
